2017 Women's Retreat

November 3–5, 2017

Do you find you are often overly busy? Distracted? Tired? Stressed? Overwhelmed? Or anxious? Do you ever  feel like you are trying to balance your busy life but feel like there is never enough time to do all that you want to do?

Jesus tells us that only one thing is necessary. And it is the good portion and it will not be taken away. What an amazing truth and promise for us all. Join us at the Chateau Whistler this November as we study the Scriptures to see what the Lord teaches us about this one thing.

Whether you're single, married, a mom, a friend or a sister—this retreat is for you. You may have been hesitant to go to a women’s retreat in the past because you didn’t think it was applicable to your stage of life, but this November you’ll be hearing from a variety of speakers from every single one of these different stages of life. Ladies, let’s learn together what it means to be a woman of God from a variety of perspectives. Our retreat will have three sessions, which include a time of worship in song, in testimony, in the Word, and in small group discussions.

BE STILL is the name of our retreat because we want to intentionally learn and practice what it means to pursue God amidst the busyness of life.

Praying the Word

Session Description
How do I know if I'm praying according to God's will? How do I get out of the rut of praying the same words over and over? How can I more effectively pray for and with others? This session will address these questions as we focus on how praying through passages of scripture can direct and enrich one's prayer life. The session will also include time for Q&A.

A Collective Meditation of Psalm 46:10

Session Description
I've had the benefit of having others share their Bible reaping practices with me, so I desire to pass on one of my favourite exercises! I love growing with other women in the Word. In this session we are going to walk through a meditative exercise of a verse and have an opportunity to share what the Holy Spirit reveals to us through our time.  (note: please bring a pen to this session)

Pouring out your heart to your Heavenly Father with pen and paper. In doing so I hope you will be excited about using this incredible tool as part of your life as well.

Speaker Bio
Melissa Menzel has been a passionate follower of Jesus since she was very young. She has been married to Matt Menzel for 10 years. Seeking first God's kingdom and His righteousness is her favourite thing to do but she also enjoys reading, writing, doing hair, knitting, Pinterest, coffee, and biking.

Trusting God with Unmet Expectations

Session Description

"The heart of a [woman] plans [her] way, but the Lord establishes [her] steps." Prov 16:9

We all have unmet expectations for our lives. The way we deal with them can either drive us to bitterness and discontentment or mold us into the women God has called us to be. The goal of this session is to equip us to handle these disappointments in a way that leads us to God and not away from him.

Reflecting on the Promises of God: How to incorporate silence and meditation into your quiet time with God

Session Description
God promises many things to His children in His word. How do we ensure these promises are buried deep in our hearts? How do we approach the word with a heart open to what the Holy Spirit wants to show us? How can this change our prayer life? Please bring your bible to this session as we will be collectively reflecting on various promises of God in a directed exercise of silence and meditation.

Speaker Bio
Laura Colley is a Registered Nurse who is a Regional Educator for Fraser Health. She has been attending Westside since the beginning. She teaches Bible Study, leads a Community Group, and plays on the worship team.

How to have a Quiet Time

Session Description
God does not command a quiet time, but He does command devotion. Jesus called it the greatest commandment:  “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength” (Deut. 6:5, Matthew 22:37). Six times in the book of Exodus God says, "I will meet with you.''

In a very practical, hands on breakout session, learn how to have a daily quiet time with the Lord. Bring your bible, pen and a journal.

Speaker Bio
Kristine Giannakos and her husband Tarry have been married for 33 years and have 5 adult children. They are in the coffee business in Vancouver.  Kristine loves to spend time with the Lord and encourage and equip other women to do the same.

Sacred Stones

Session Description
In the Old Testament, God told His people to build altars or use stones as a marker when they encountered Him, "to serve as a sign so when your children asks you, 'What do these stones mean?' tell them..." Joshua 4: 4:6-7. No matter the length of our spiritual walk, we have encounters with God that are personal to us and become part of our God-story. In this session we'll take time to consider and gather some personal spiritual markers (a turning point, an "a-ha" moment, a sweet truth from His word) so when trouble comes we can remember, be still and know that He is God.

Speaker Bio
Marilyn Harapnuik, a long time Jesus follower, mom of two young adult sons and glued to her man for almost 25 years. She was raised "in the church" with the privilege of learning, growing, faltering and often failing, and in all of it continually depending on His grace to work it all out. She enjoys connecting with friends, studying God's truth, and reading.

REDEEMING TIME (Panel discussion)

Session Description
"I remember wanting to go to the dentist so I would finally have some alone time!". "I lock myself in the bathroom just so I can get away from my kids." "Thank you for inviting me to Bible study. Right now I have to pass, I don't have time to have a shower let alone do any Bible homework."

As moms of kids from newborns to teenagers, we know the joys and work involved with raising little people, and we know life is busy! But we also know the importance of intentionally pursing time alone with Jesus. We hope to give you practical advice on how we find time to be Mary and not just Martha. This is a practical session guided primarily by questions you have about being a mom who is trying to balance life in order to honor God and your family.

To help us prepare for this session we would appreciate questions ahead of time. Please send your questions to Nicole Funk on The City by October 15.
